Two New Master Students
September 4, 2023: Achere Eyong and Simon van Staalduine have joined the Menzel Lab. They are both students of the Nanobiology Master’s program at TU Delft and will work on their end projects.
Achere will develop a portable setup to enable clinical applications of Computational Scattered Light Imaging. Simon will work on improving the efficiency of information uptake from light scattering patterns.
New PhD Student
July 1, 2023: Loes Ettema has joined the Menzel Lab. She will develop dedicated tissue preparation and measurement protocols for Computational Scattered Light Imaging, allowing to disentangle densely interwoven fiber networks - not only in the brain, but also in other fibrous tissue samples containing muscle or collagen fibers.
Loes received her Bachelor’s degree in Medical Natural Sciences and her Master’s degree in Biomedical Technology and Physics, both at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. She worked in the Biophotonics and Medical Imaging group, supervised by Dr. Freek Ariese and Prof. dr. Marloes Groot, where she performed label-free Raman and fluorescence imaging on Alzheimer’s diseased brain tissues, and used second harmonic generation microscopy to image axon-like structures in differentiated cell cultures.

April 26, 2023: Franca auf der Heiden and Jan A. Reuter gave a talk at the OPTICA Biophotonics Congress in Vancouver about the newest developments of computational scattered light imaging (papers BW1B.3 and BW1B.6).
New Postdoc
March 1, 2023: Hamed Abbasi has joined the Menzel Lab. He will explore alternative tissue types and clinical applications of computational scattered light imaging.
Hamed received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Basel, Switzerland. Since 2021, he has been working as postdoctoral researcher at the Erasmus Medical Center in Rotterdam on photonics-guided surgery, where he combines fluorescence-guided surgery and Raman spectroscopy to improve the surgical removal of oral cancer.
New Master Student
February 1, 2023: Roman Pavelkin has joined the Menzel Lab. He will work on an optimized reconstruction of nerve fiber pathways in brain tissue by improving the illumination strategy of computational scattered light imaging.
Roman does his diploma internship in the Erasmus Mundus Master’s program “Photonics for Security, Reliability, and Safety”. The program combines photonics approaches with signal processing and machine learning.
Launch of the Menzel Lab
October 1, 2022: Miriam has joined the Department of Imaging Physics at TU Delft as Assistant Professor.
